The Beatles are preparing to sell their songs online after years of refusing to take part in the Internet music boom, according to testimony given by the head of their record company.

Neil Aspinall, a former Beatles road manager and managing director of Apple Corps, was a witness in the company's trademark lawsuit against Apple Computer (Research).

He said that the company was digitally remastering the entire Beatles catalogue, which would pave the way for selling the songs online reports CNN.

"I think it would be wrong to offer downloads of the old masters when I am making new masters," he said in a written statement submitted to the High Court in London earlier this month.

creativezenvisionmblack.jpg

"Probably the first question people ask when reading this review is whether the Creative Zen Vision:M has a better screen than the video iPod. After all, Mr. Hoo should have already dissected the Apple's, and came up with countermeasures before hitting back. Putting the video iPod next the Zen, the Creative seems to take the lead with the colors on the 2.5 QVGA screen being very vivid and vibrant. The LCD's contrast is excellent. There's just a bit too much color saturation than necessary, causing some finer details to wash away."

Creative Zen Vision M 30GB.jpg

Cnet Reviews
Creative's new iPod Clone , The Zen Vision: M (30GB) .

The good: Fast transfer speed; wide video codec support; brilliant screen; improved vertical scroll.
The bad: Stiff keys; bothersome sync adapter; thicker than the iPod.
The bottom line: There is a lot going for the Zen Vision: M, and true to form, Creative has just created yet another iPod killer to take on the incumbent.

sc003 creative zen vision m.jpg

On heels of releasing a new iPod clone - Zen Vision: M, Creative boss Sim Wong Hoo told the BBC he plans to "pursue aggressively" a US patent it owns on a system used to navigate music on digital players. Creative was one of the first to market digital music players in 2000, but has since been overshadowed by Apple. This little fact apparently eats Sim and he wants the world know it.

"We will pursue all manufacturers that use the same navigation system," said Mr Sim. "This is something we will pursue aggressively.

"Hopefully this will be friendly, but people have to respect intellectual property."

The similarly styled and priced device will compete directly with Apple Computer's video iPod for a spot on every technophile's holiday wish list. Creative plans to put the Vision:M up for sale this month, and with less than three weeks left in the shopping season, that makes the device a tough sell reports Forbes.

"They're extremely late," says Tim Bajarin, analyst with market research firm Creative Strategies, which is unaffiliated with Creative. "In this stage of the game, I'm skeptical this product will give them enough revenue to impact the bottom line for their next quarter."

Mr Sim denied the company had copied Apple's design, saying it had been working on the look for more than a year.

Creative are touting the Zen as a far more powerful player than Apple's offering, with additional functions such as FM radio and a built-in mic reports the BBC

"We are focused on the technology," he said. "This is still a technology marketplace."

"This is the key difference between a technology company and a branding company," he said, taking a side-swipe at Apple's successful marketing campaign for its iPod.

Past Quote - CEO Sim Wong Hoo on the Apple iPod Shuffle

We're expecting a good fight but they're coming out with something that's five generations older. It's our first generation MuVo One product feature, without display, just have a (shuffle feature). We had that - that's a four-year-old product. So I think the whole industry will just laugh at it, because the flash people - it's worse than the cheapest Chinese player. Even the cheap, cheap Chinese brand today has display and has FM. They don't have this kind of thing, and they expect to come out with a fight; I think it's a non-starter to begin with.

"The iRiver U10's design is very modern and sleek, with an all white body topped off with a black faceplate surrounding a 320x240 QVGA color screen. Unlike other MP3 players, no room on the face was reserved for navigation controls, making the sole point of interest the screen itself. Instead, navigation is accomplished by grasping the bordered edges of the screen and literally clicking it in one of four directions, as if it were a directional pad on a video game console. iriver calls this the D-Click system, and it's very smart."

sony flash player.jpg
Apple's Shares tumbled yesterday following news of a new Sony flash memory portable player that will go head to head with the iPod Shuffle.

Apple shares dropped by 5.2 percent to $40.53 per share while Sony's stocks showed strength as they moved up the charts by 4.35 percent to $41.02. However the prognosis remains good. Wall Street analyst, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, has told clients that he expects Apple to outperform expectations in this financial quarter reports PC PRO. While the Sony Player is not at attractive in the looks department as the iPod Shuffle, the Sony flash memory new player adds features the iPod Shuffle lacks, the player will feature a radio tuner, more size options, a screen and up to 50 hours playback on one double A battery.

The Sony mini players should cost between $150 and $180. More on Players

Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich thinks that Apple need not worry too much about competition for the iPod shuffle. In his words 'We believe these are likely to be solid sellers, but they don't support iTunes and do not have the cache of an iPod.'
Steven also believes that Apple can easily respond to any effect that subscription-based music services, such as Napster, may have on iTunes Music Store sales.

'We don't see a big impact on Apple because (1) we are not big believers in the subscription model where consumers pay indefinitely to listen to their favorite songs, and (2) if we're wrong, Apple can establish a subscription service with few barriers to entry,' he said.

In closing a little birdie told me that the dive could stem from the pending patent infringement lawsuits Apple now faces.

pss110.JPG

The Philips 'PSS110' Personal Sound System is a portable flash based MP3/WMA player with built in speakers. The device features 256MB of internal memory for storing music and the ability to connect to your desktop to transfer songs over high speed USB 2.0.

The folks at LordPercy reviews the PSS110

Apparently Philips see this flash based MP3 player as a way to let the youth (spelt yoof) of today express themselves and share music with their homeboys (buddies) and in essence this is similar to many of the Ipod docking stations we've tested in recent months. MP3 is seen as a solitary pastime with the MP3 player as a direct replacement for that old Sony walkman, but the PSS110 while packing 256mb of storage is also a mini boombox with 2 speakers with XSL acoustics that claim to fill a room with sound.
