AMD India has launched its 64-bit, dual-core server and workstation solutions for enterprise users

AMD India has launched its 64-bit, dual-core server and workstation solutions for enterprise users. AMD has also launched the Athlon 64 x2 dual-core processor for PCs. Vendors like Sun, HP, IBM, Wipro, and HCL will provide the enterprise support for AMD processors.

Processor makers have started shifting to dual-core processors to avoid the technical snags they hit with current single-core variants reports Networking magazine.

Software companies are examining how software-licensing policies will adapt to this new technology.

Acer America has announced the TravelMate C310 a new convertible laptop and Tablet computer. The C310 features full-sized keyboard, can be used Tablet PC with the included stylus, Integrated Wi-Fi 802.11b/g WLAN, three USB 2.0 ports, an IEEE 1394 port, gigabit LAN connection, a 56K V.92 modem, 14.1” XGA display and options including an Intel Pentium M Processor 760, 1 GB DDR RAM, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 graphics, and a 100GB detachable hard drive. The C310 weighs only 6.4 pounds. Starts $1,699.

Intel dual-core server chip

Intel has announced new details of its forthcoming dual-core server chips and has released benchmarks for its forthcoming dual-core Itanium processor. Currently Intel offers two dual-core chips, designed for desktop PCs and workstations. Dual-core chips use two central processing units (CPUs) on a single substrate to boost overall performance.

While firms might assume a dual-core chip would deliver twice the performance of a single core version, benchmark results of a forthcoming Itanium chip indicate firms should expect only a 60 percent performance improvement from the new technology. More

About 80 percent of new servers are fitted with two Intel Xeon processors, but the first Intel dual-core server chip will be a Pentium that can be used only in low-end single-socket servers. Intel said this first chip will be the Pentium D and its corresponding Intel E7230 chipset.
