Sony TAV-L1

Sony, Japan has announced plans to release the TAV-L1, a new TV/Audio integrated system which combines a 32in HD Ready Bravia LCD screen with a Super Audio CD/DVD hi-fi system.

In Audio mode, the sound panel, featuring the speaker drivers, completely conceals the screen. In Theatre mode, the audio block slides down, revealing the screen. The speaker system is a 2.1 configuration and uses Sony's S-Force processing. The company rates the power output at 50W per channel plus 100W for the subwoofer.

TiVo may begin offering free PVRs

In an effort to attack new customers, TiVo may start giving away its PVRs for $0 , CEO Tom Rogers said this morning.

Rogers said the company, whose name has become synonymous with the ability to pause live television and skip commercials, was close to offering a range of pricing options, including one plan that would include a free set-top box.

"We're continuing to pursue the prospects of zero upfront and all upfront" pricing

The company is likely to begin the test to offer free boxes, possibly in exchange for higher priced and longer term plans, fairly soon, said Rogers, who was named chief executive last July.

Toshiba Japan has announced the “REGZA H1000 series” line of LCD TV's in 3 different screen sizes - 42/37/32. The new line features a built in 160 GB hard drive (allows for program recording, + It is possible to watch a different channel while recording a terrestrial digital broadcast) . The digital broadcast can be recorder in MPEG-2 TS format. As for input terminals- HDMI×1, D4×1,S image ×2, composite ×3, analog audio ×3. Also digital broadcast video recording output and S1 image output, head phone output and built in 10W×2ch speakers with SRS WOW technology.

Mitsubishi makes world's 1st laser-based rear projection TV

Mitsubishi Electric Corp has developed the world's first rear projection television that uses a laser as its light source instead of a mercury lamp as with current rear projection TVs.

The laser-based rear projection TV provides a higher picture quality than liquid crystal display and plasma display panel televisions, according to the home electronics equipment maker. Light from a semiconductor laser is divided into red, blue and green, making it possible to represent images with a color variety 1.8 times greater than that of LCD TVs and thereby improving image quality.

Toshiba has announced a new line of HD ready LCDs. The WLT66 series comes in four sizes are 32”, 37”, 42” and 47”, with each featuring 2 x HDMI inputs (with HDCP), 2 x SCART and a Component video input, plus an integrated digital tuner. Toshiba touts the range's high picture quality ability thanks to their "Active Vision LCD picture processing technology" which boosts detail, color, contrast and movement.

At CeBit 2006, AHT International will demonstrate the P2POD - a P2P media streaming box. The P2POD box uses software technology developed by the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Their peer-to-peer based solution allows not only content distribution, but also live video streaming over peer-to-peer networks.

The P2POD features a maximum video resolution of 1920x1080 (full HDTV) and features a HDMI port.
