The recently announced Philips 32-inch "32PF9630A" LCD FlatTV will the first TV with Philips' proprietary ClearLCD technology launched in the US. market. The ClearLCD technology uses scanning and backlight dimming technology to create images on an LCD screen with much great motion clarity and contrast. This scanning backlight technology is combined with a new backlight module, using Philips' HCFL lamps, allowing for deeper dimming of the lamps, resulting in better black level, higher contrast and a larger viewing angle. The technology provides high contrast with a flicker-free, quiet image and increases the LCD display viewing angle.
The 32PF9630A also features Pixel Plus 2 HD technology for sharper images in addition to technology that enables viewers to access digital content on their TVs via the latest connectivity, including two HDMI, two USB connectors and a digital memory card reader.
Available in September 2005, the suggested retail price of the 32PF9630A is $2,199.

Victor, JP, JVC) has announced NX-DV5-S a new DVD/MD system. The NX-DV5-S will be available in Japan February 1st -- expected price 80,000 Yen. In addition to the NX-DV5-S, JVC also announced the active sub woofer "SP-DW1" (sold separately) set for launch in Japan on March 1st. for 19,000 Yen.
The NX-DV5-S is made up a center unit, four speakers and Active sub woofer. The center unit features support for DVD audio, DVD video, video CD, CD-DA and DVD-R/RW
(Only video format), CD-R/RW (CD-DA, video CD, Super video CD, MP3, WMA and JPEG format) , Playback of PAL system DVD disk possible, Dolby digital decoder, DTS, AAC and Dolby professional logic II, FM tuner, the Mini Disc end supports MDLP and 5x sound recording from CD.
The center unit measures 260x358x80mm and weighs approximately 3.8 kg.

Sony "may" be preparing to release its first PlayStation Portable (PSP) update, if a file that is currently making the rounds on the Internet is a leaked copy of an early version of the update code. Features found in the update: Web browsing - Email program, Word processor - Spreadsheet - Voice - Music downloads - Wireless TV - onscreen calculator utility, three games and an automatic software update.

Engadget reports on a few XM Satellite Radio patents filed back in April 2004 that were made publicly available at the end of December . The patent applications include details for a device that would access a broadcast system with time-shifted on-demand program purchasing which would be downloadable to a removable memory format. The device would also provide and facilitate the acquisition of video, graphics, text or any other media content. The patent application also outlines integration for all these features into a cellphone.

NYtimes is reporting that the possible TiVo deal with the countries largest cable provider - Comcast is down the drain. The deal with Comcast could have given TiVo credited as one of the pioneers in the digital recording industry renewed life after loosing DirecTV who will stop pushing TiVo in favor of their own DVR. Due to Comcast's tight grip on the cash and control Michael Ramsay, TiVo's chief executive, decided to pull out of the deal. Ramsay's decision was backed by the board. Just Last week, TiVo announced that Mr. Ramsay was stepping down as chief executive but would remain as chairman. He said the change was his idea and had been under discussion for months. The board hopes to hire someone with less of Mr. Ramsay's fierce belief in the power of TiVo's technology. umm OK. Just to clarify that Comcast deal apparently had nothing to do with him stepping down. According to Seattle Times many agree that TiVo's service remains the best of breed, with its easy navigational controls and advanced search and record functions. So we shall see if TiVo can survive.

Samsung Electronics announced that it has completed development of a flexible LCD panel prototype measuring 5" inches and weighing only 22 grams. The flexible prototype is made from a thin plastic backing. Displays based on the technology will be lighter and more robust than conventional LCDs. The panel uses amorphous silicon TFT LCD technology and features SVGA (400-x-300 pixels) resolution.
Samsung intends to commercialize products based on the technology by 2007 breaking the mold of LCDs made from glass panels. The first products using the screens will be notebook PCs and other portable consumer electronics product. . Plastic panels will also enable numerous other new applications including wearable displays with helmets, glasses and other fashion related accessories.
