Valve Software co-founder Gabe Newell in a chat with gaming news site called Kikizo explained that he thinks Apple "has never taken gaming seriously" and the company "can't even follow through [sic] on any of their commitments [to] game developers"

Kikizo: People keep asking you about a potential Macintosh version, and your stance is that this is a strictly Windows project...?

Gabe: Well, we tried to have a conversation with Apple for several years, and they never seemed to... well, we have this pattern with Apple, where we meet with them, people there go "wow, gaming is incredibly important, we should do something with gaming". And then we'll say, "OK, here are three things you could do to make that better", and then they say OK, and then we never see them again. And then a year later, a new group of people show up, who apparently have no idea that the last group of people were there, and never follow though on anything. So, they seem to think that they want to do gaming, but there's never any follow through on any of the things they say they're going to do. That makes it hard to be excited about doing games for their platforms.

Kikizo: So you think it's all because of staff turnaround in their gaming department?

Gabe: I just don't think they've ever taken gaming seriously. And none of the things developers ask them to do are done. And as a result, there's no gaming market there to speak of. We'd love it if they would get serious about it. But they never have, and can't even follow trough on any of their commitments for game developers.

Gene Munster an analyst with Piper Jaffray projects that Apple's share price will jump to $205 per share in 2008

One thing we learned with the iPod is that when a device is game-changing, the demand will come...However, it is difficult to predict the inflection point. For example, in December 2004, Street expectations for iPod ran wild with investors anticipating 8 million iPods, but Apple only sold 4.6 million. It was feared at the time that the iPod would never go mainstream.

Conversations with investors over the past month suggest awareness of potential for iPhone units is high, but awareness of potential resulting impact to earnings is low...if Apple can sell 45 million units in CY09, the earnings power and historical multiple ranges suggest our price target is reasonable.

Digg Buckles to users over HD-DVD AACS Processing Key number/font>

Digg.com has issued a statement to users after a major digg-a-volt, While you were sleeping, a user posted the HD-DVD AACS Processing Key number, which would allow someone to crack the copy protection on an HD-DVD. Digg deleted the story which received over 15,000 diggs, along with the user account.

After the move, Digg's front page was filled with stories with the HD-DVD AACS Processing Key number or criticizing Digg for its actions.

Now Digg.com is sorry. Founder Kevin Rose writes

Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts...

In building and shaping the site I've always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We've always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you've made it clear. You'd rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won't delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

Still, a number of people claim that HD-DVD is a Digg sponsor, hence the move on his part.

A story highlight

"Digg deleted my hard drive for posting the HD-DVD KEY! Now my hard drive refuses to write in binary. I get Error Code: 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0 . Oh noz."

Swelling Battery on the 17" MacBook Pro?

Hardmac claims to be receiving complaints from Apple lovers , who say the battery on the 17" MacBook Pro is swelling - pointing to a possible defective series of batteries.

I am the system administrator of a research lab and I have been facing the "swelling battery" issue. among 4 MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo ordered, three of them had swelling battery, and should be replaced. The first sign of the problem that will lead latter on to the swelling syndrome is the random shunt-down of the notebook when running on battery. sometimes, it can also be identified by a lower reactivity of the trackpad, due to the pressure of the swelling battery.

Xbox 3 revealed in Microsoft Patent?

Tech gossips speculate on the Xbox 3 after viewing a patent filed by Software giant , Microsoft. The patent shows a "console" (presumably a next-gen XBox) being the central hub of the network, communicating with handheld devices.

A gaming system including handheld devices and console devices has variable functionality and processing performance as determined by the number of components in the system. Gaming components can be combined wirelessly, by wired connections (e.g., via a docking station), or a combination thereof. The processing capabilities and functionality of each gaming component in a combination are augmented by the processing capabilities and functionality of other gaming components in the combination. To take advantage of another gaming components processing capabilities and memory capacity, each gaming component is capable of utilizing another gaming component to process gaming applications. Further, each gaming component is capable of rendering audio and/or video information provided by another gaming component. Also, a gaming component is capable of utilizing another gaming component as an adjunct processor.

American Technology analyst Shaw Wu citing sources indicate that a mail-in rebate or carrier subsidy for iPhone of $50-150 is under serious consideration by the Cupertino-based electronics firm.

"We are hearing rebates of $50-150 that will be offered by AT&T to lower the price points for iPhone (currently $499 for 4 GB and $599 for 8 GB) and to entice customers to sign longer term voice and data contracts," the analyst wrote. "From AT&T's perspective, a rebate is a great marketing tool and small sacrifice to make to entice a customer to sign up for 2-year voice and data cell phone plans that cost about $75-100 per month (before taxes and fees), meaning $1800-2400 in 'guaranteed' bi-annual revenue."

Software giant Microsoft is reportedly urging regulators to look into Google’s plan to buy DoubleClick, an online advertising company.

Microsoft contends that the $3.1 billion deal, announced on Friday, would hurt competition in the fast-growing market for advertising on the Web and raises questions about how much personal information would be collected by Google, already a dominant player in online advertising.

Bradford L. Smith, Microsoft’s general counsel, said in an interview yesterday that Google’s purchase of DoubleClick would combine the two largest online advertising distributors and thus “substantially reduce competition in the advertising market on the Web.”
