Sony CEO talks Playstation 3 CELL technology

scei4.jpg

Sony's new CEO Howard Stringer said that Sony will cut back on some of its research and development programs in an effort to put more focus on products that the company believes will allow it dominate once again. Stringer emphasized two items that will be key to Sony's business for many years to come: the Cell processor, will be used to power the PlayStation 3 and many Sony's electronics, -- Cell delivers improved, real-time response for entertainment and rich media applications, in many cases 10 times the performance of the latest PC processors. It is expected the Cell microprocessor will become the broadband processor used for industrial applications to the new digital home.

Cell also supports multiple operating systems, such as conventional operating systems (including Linux), real-time operating systems for computer entertainment and consumer electronics applications as well as guest operating systems for specific applications, simultaneously. -- and the Blu-ray disc, hi-def standard format for the PS3. (Sony hopes this will eventually replaces DVD in the marketplace)

"PlayStation is the largest chip eater. Leveraging game applications, we've got the most advanced [Cell] technology, which will give us high competitiveness. The next step is determining what applications we can develop on the Cell processor, for which we are launching a project," said Sony president Ryoji Chubachi

Xbox 360 more powerful than PlayStation 3 'update'

15016_1.jpg

Last week we published a comment from ATI's Richard Huddy claiming the Xbox 360 would have the edge over the PlayStation 3 thanks to the ATI Xenos chipset used in the 360. At the time we just had one quote, here is the remainder of Huddy's comments. On paper the RSX inside the PlayStation 3 is 50MHz faster than the Xenos. Huddy claims that the unified shader architecture of the Xenos will give Xbox 360 a graphical edge over the PlayStation 3.

scei4.jpg

Sony Computer Entertainment has not yet reached a decision on when the PlayStation 3 next-generation console will launch in Europe, with SCEE president David Reeves commenting that "you could be in for a surprise."

Final PS3 more powerful than E3 demo?

scei3.jpg

Japanese site ITmedia says the final Sony PlayStation 3 Cell CPU will run 25 percent faster than demo machine previewed at E3 reports GameSpot. One major complaint from Gamers is that Sony never follows through with all the speed talk, so this is pretty major if it turns out to be true.

Itmedia revealed that the Cell chip used in Sony's current PS3 developer machine is running at only 2.4GHz, which is just 75 percent of the actual speed of the machine's final spec of 3.2GHz. The report also re-confirms that the graphics processor unit used in the E3 machine was not the RSX chip that will be used in the final product, but another Nvidia GPU, possibly the just-announced GeForce 7800 GTX.

NVidia GeForce 7800 GTX

Wednesday, NVidia announced the GeForce 7800 GTX, made from the same technology that's going into Sony's PlayStation 3 game consoles is already available to users in markets around the world.

At E3 gamers convention in Los Angeles last month NVidia previewed the graphics power behind the 7800 GTX during PlayStation 3 previews. NVidia officials were careful to point out that only its graphics technology is being used in the chip for PlayStation 3, dubbed RSX, while the rest of the chip will be made by Sony reports DigiMag.

"The gaming enthusiasts really are the most demanding of all for computer graphics, more so even than movie studios," said Adam Foat, a product public relations manager at Nvidia, during an interview ahead of the new GPU's launch.
