Digital-music veteran Rob Lord and a four other really cool people, have started Pioneers of the Inevitable, a new open-source startup.
Lord's company is building a piece of digital-music software called "Songbird," based on much of the same underlying open-source technology as the Firefox Web browser reports CNet.
Songbird programmers want to create music-playing software that will work naturally with the growing number of music sites and services on the Web, instead of being focused on songs on a computer's hard drive.
Songbird is a complete desktop media player or "jukebox" with a uniquely open approach to Internet digital media network services.
Songbird is developed by Pioneers of the Inevitable, a small, chirpy team of digital media innovators whose previous incubations include the Winamp 5 and Y! Music Engine media players and Muse.Net, a location-independent digital media network service acquired by Yahoo!.

Fact: I am not sure where this rumor started.
Fact: Microsoft just seems to follow nowadays (not that this is a bad thing - once you do it better)
OK. Rumor Microsoft plans on launching a subscription-based Movie download service (think low rent Itunes [I kid) but for movies). The service would offer either unlimited downloads or one with a high limit for a flat monthly fee reports MacRumors
What would be really cool & a slap in Apple's face is if the service works on the iPod Video... I will go a step further ... wouldn't it be like so crazy if the service worked on the Sony PSP ... the would be like a double bitch slap....

Microsoft has announced plans to cut support for IE for Apple Macs. The software giant advised Mac users of Internet Explorer (IE) to switch to rival browsers such as Apple's Safari.
Microsoft initially said it had stopped work on the browser in June.
No more security updates will be provided as from the New Year. The browser itself will be removed from Microsoft's Mactopia site and no longer be available for download.

If you had plans to pick up a 1GB iPod shuffle for a pal this season, you will need to return to the drawing board. Apple Insider is reporting that the 1 GB iPod Shuffle is sold out.
The $129 iPod is "Sold out for holiday," Apple said in a message on its online store. New stock of the original flash-based iPod is not expected until "mid-January." Not surprisingly, mid-January is also the time Apple traditionally unveils its latest consumer products at the Macworld Expo trade show in San Francisco. This year's festivities are set to kick-off on January 10th.
What to expect, people hawking shuffles on ebay for outrageous amounts of money.

Apple iPod enthusiasts are going crazy with Wireless/Java iPods speculation following an announcement by PortalPlayer - the company that makes iPods for Apple - concerning their acquisition of a small private wireless-technology firm.... and how 2006 will be all about wireless
Rumors/speculation of a wireless iPod is not new, with previous comments by Motorola execs as well as Apple patent images depicting a wireless iPod reports MacRumors
The last time Steve Jobs spoke on the subject, he claimed that Bluetooth for the iPod isn't a good option due to sound quality and headphone recharging issues.
PortalPlayer also announced that it has licensed Sun Microsystems' Java™ Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) technologies to be included in its personal media player platforms, which are expected to be released in the first half of 2006. The agreement will enable PortalPlayer customers to add Java applications such as games and productivity tools to next-generation personal media players

If rumors are to believed Apple computer is planning a number of iPod companions. I am going to go out on a limb and say Apple probably can't deal with the success other companies have with iPod accessories and decided it was time to make some accessory cash.
According to sources spilling to AppleInsider
Sources familiar with the company's plans describe the new products as "iPod companions" rather than "accessories," and say Apple appears ripe to announce the first of the gadgets as early as the second week of January at the annual Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Calif.
One such product described to AppleInsider is an iPod boombox "unlike anything seen in boombox world" and strikingly different from "anything Apple has released in the past."
Details of the device are few and far between, but one source called the gadget an oversized iPod with boombox-type speakers. "It's ideal for use on a bookshelf or on the go," the source said.
The device is rumored to include wireless audio streaming capabilities, but could also rely on a built-in hard drive, iPod dock, or a combination of the three technologies. Nevertheless, the Cupertino, Calif-based iPod maker is expected to market the device as "plug and play music for your home."

On heels of releasing a new iPod clone - Zen Vision: M, Creative boss Sim Wong Hoo told the BBC he plans to "pursue aggressively" a US patent it owns on a system used to navigate music on digital players. Creative was one of the first to market digital music players in 2000, but has since been overshadowed by Apple. This little fact apparently eats Sim and he wants the world know it.
"We will pursue all manufacturers that use the same navigation system," said Mr Sim. "This is something we will pursue aggressively.
"Hopefully this will be friendly, but people have to respect intellectual property."
The similarly styled and priced device will compete directly with Apple Computer's video iPod for a spot on every technophile's holiday wish list. Creative plans to put the Vision:M up for sale this month, and with less than three weeks left in the shopping season, that makes the device a tough sell reports Forbes.
"They're extremely late," says Tim Bajarin, analyst with market research firm Creative Strategies, which is unaffiliated with Creative. "In this stage of the game, I'm skeptical this product will give them enough revenue to impact the bottom line for their next quarter."
Mr Sim denied the company had copied Apple's design, saying it had been working on the look for more than a year.
Creative are touting the Zen as a far more powerful player than Apple's offering, with additional functions such as FM radio and a built-in mic reports the BBC
"We are focused on the technology," he said. "This is still a technology marketplace."
"This is the key difference between a technology company and a branding company," he said, taking a side-swipe at Apple's successful marketing campaign for its iPod.
Past Quote - CEO Sim Wong Hoo on the Apple iPod Shuffle
We're expecting a good fight but they're coming out with something that's five generations older. It's our first generation MuVo One product feature, without display, just have a (shuffle feature). We had that - that's a four-year-old product. So I think the whole industry will just laugh at it, because the flash people - it's worse than the cheapest Chinese player. Even the cheap, cheap Chinese brand today has display and has FM. They don't have this kind of thing, and they expect to come out with a fight; I think it's a non-starter to begin with.
