Apple hungry?

mac-min-back.jpg
Approximately 100 Apple Computer retail stores opened 1 hour early on Saturday in anticipation of a flood of Apple hungry people looking to take a bite of the Mac Mini, Apple's new $499 budget computer and the $99 iPod Shuffle portable music player. Fans hope to forgo the three to four weeks behind on the Mini and Shuffle when purchased on the company's website, Apple executives say some Minis will be available in stores this weekend, along with a greater supply of the Shuffle, no word on how many. Apple hopes the Mac Mini will take the brand beyond the creative folk and touch the hearts of the not so creative. Analysts believe Apple's mini cheap price will probably entice users of rival Microsoft Corp.'s Windows to switch operating systems and go with the Mac and its Mac OS X operating system. There is a snag however while the mini is pleasing to the eye, and cheap by Apple standards it comes without display, keyboard, or mouse. Forbes reports Office Depot on Thursday advertised a Compaq PC with monitor for $300, after rebates. Dell on Thursday advertised a PC with a 15-inch flat-panel monitor for $349, after rebates.

The Mac mini measures a mere 16.51cm wide, 5.08cm high and weighs less than 1.5kg, touted as the cheapest Apple ever the basic model at $500 features a 40gb hard drive, 256mb of Ram, a DVD player and CD Writer drive, a modem, a network port, USB ports, a FireWire port and a monitor port. Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller cautions consumers not to think of the Mini as anything but a small, second computer or first Mac.

Darwin not perfect

Security company Immunity has uncovered four vulnerabilities in the open-source operating system Mac OS X is based on called Darwin. The bugs were first discovered in June, during a large-scale source code audit of Darwin by Immunity's security research team. The vulnerabilities affecting all recent versions of OS X are caused by memory errors in the kernel. This kind of bug mostly affects remote systems with multiple users," David Aitel, founder and security consultant with Immunity told CNet News.com. This means most desktop users of the operating system will not be too badly affected. Flaws include: kernel problems; HFS catalog search; and a task scheduling logic bug.

Apple is now investigating the flaws.

the Shuffle will be late

ipod shuffle out of stock.jpg
Just one week after launch, Apple's flash memory player going by the name iPod Shuffle is umm backordered by up to four weeks. There is a two-to three-week wait for the $99 512MB iPod Shuffle, which holds about 120 songs, while customers face a wait of three to four weeks for the $149 1GB iPod Shuffle. I am sure that this will totally increase the demand for the already love Shuffle. Speaking of iPod Shuffle love - Dell CEO Kevin Rollins has this to say on the iPod

"Apple's in the $2.4 billion (region), so the size and scale is not even in the same league. But what they do they do very well, and they've had great success with the iPod. It's interesting: The iPod has been out for three years, and it's only this past year it's become a raging success.

Do not install Sony PSP updater

Sony Computer Entertainment has issued a statement regarding the file that offers a update of the Sony PSP. Sony revealed that the file was originally downloaded from a Sony maintenance server. "It was indeed developed by SCEI," "but it's a dummy file at best, and isn't something that has been officially released. Using it could damage your PSP." When running the software, users are first given a list of new features before the update actually begins installation. The list of features promised by the update is, according to SCE, not necessarily indicative of features that will be made available for the PSP in the future. "The PSP is equipped with the ability to go through the network and update its firmware, but the features that will be added are still undecided."

If you jumped the boat and installed that updater already SCEI revealed that it plans to offer a fix at some point in the future.
