Even though Siemens is the fourth largest handset maker by market share it has struggled to make a profit. In the fourth quarter of 2004 the mobile division lost 140 million pounds. The paper reports a final decision will be announced at the Siemens annual general meeting on 27 January.
A spokesman for Siemens declined to comment on the report but confirmed to the Scotsman newspaper that the division's future was under review by chief executive Heinrich von Pierer and that an announcement will be made at the annual meeting.

Anti-virus firm F-Secure has discovered a new worm that targets smart phones. The new worm, called Lasco.A targets Symbian Series 60 devices such as the Nokia 7610 and Siemens SX1. Lasco.A worm uses Bluetooth to spread the infected .SIS file to other devices. The worm uses Bluetooth to seek out another mobile device set to Bluetooth discoverable mode, it then sends the Velasco.sis file that contains the worm to the other mobile device. Once the user accepts the Velasco.sis file and installs it, the worm activates. According to F-Secure, the worm can only be sent to phones that support Bluetooth and are in discoverable mode.
