Hammacher is offering a motorized replica of the headstrong little droid from the Star Wars films for $119. The Voice-Activated R2-D2 responds to voice commands, navigates rooms and hallways, and makes any home feel like it has been transported to a galaxy far, far away.
R2 obeys more than 40 voice commands (Turn around! Move forward two units!) and he plays games like tag, using an infra-red sensor to search for people in a room. His sensor helps him follow behind you, or it can be set to detect motion, turning R2 into a room sentry that sounds an alarm when a secured area is invaded. R2s lights, swiveling dome top, and distinctive happy and sad sounds faithfully mimic the real thing, right down to his occasional bad mood. (A simple command of, R2, behave yourself! snaps him out of it.) R2 can also replay sounds and dialog from Star Wars movies, answer yes-or-no questions, and dance while playing the famed cantina music. Requires four AA batteries and four D batteries (not included). Minor assembly required. Ages 8 and up. 15" H x 7 1/2" W x 10 1/2" L. (6 lbs.)

The Blu-ray DVD group said on Tuesday it still planned to roll out a high-definition disc format in spring 2006, though members of the consortium led by Sony Corp. said they would unveil specific launch plans at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January reports Reuters
"We're sticking with the spring time frame," said Andy Parsons, a spokesman for Blu-ray, at a demonstration of the new high-capacity DVD format.
The announcement came as Blu-ray DVD group member companies start gearing up to make their own product plans known at next month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
CES is similarly expected to play host to product announcements from supporters of Blu-ray Disc rival HD DVD. The Toshiba-led format was originally planned to launch in the US in Q4 2005, but a Q1 2006 debut is now more likely, and its backers will be looking to make a big impression at CES reports the Register

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today that Sony would implement parental controls in its forthcoming machine, PlayStation 3.
The announcement was made by ESA President Doug Lowenstein who commended the PlayStation 3 console manufacturers for voluntarily implementing the parental control technology.
For PlayStation 2, parental controls will extend only to movies and not to games. Sony was not immediately prepared to comment reports iht.com.
The video game industry has been under attack from parents and watchdog groups - especially in the wake of this year's scandal involving hidden adult content in the popular Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Microsoft placed parental controls in its Xbox 360, which went on sale last week. The machine lets users restrict access to video games and DVDs that carry certain ratings, such as T for teenager or M for mature. It also offers parental controls on the company's Xbox Live online gaming service, limiting who their children can interact with.
This month, Nintendo announced similar plans for its next-generation machine, Revolution, scheduled for 2006.
