According to Chicago Business Motorola is working on a handset half as thick as the Razr phone in a bid to overtake arch-rival Nokia in its strongholds overseas.

Expected to be in stores across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia by next year, the Scalpel will sell for around $40, according to an analyst briefed on the product.

With its sleek design and mass-market price, Scalpel is a frontal assault on the world's top-selling cell phone maker in its strongest markets.
