1 million subscribers have signed up to Apple Computer' new iTunes podcast service

Apple

More than 1 million subscribers have signed up to Apple Computer' new iTunes podcast service since launch. Apple includes the podcasting capability with iTunes 4.9, the latest version of its music downloading and listening software reports Market Watch.

Although downloading audio files over the Internet has been possible for years, the growing popularity of portable MP3 players and cellphones that play digital audio files is creating demand for online distribution and challenging conventional radio reports New York Times.

The company offers access to more than 3,000 podcasts, which are Internet-based audio programs that people can download and listen to on their computers, or on portable digital-music players such as Apple's iPod. Sources include radio operations like ABC News, BBC, Clear Channel and WGBH in Boston and an array of upstart programmers.

The Apple system makes it possible to subscribe to the podcasts as if they were channels. When the user's iPod is connected to a Macintosh or a Windows PC, the device is synchronized and the latest audio file from the podcasting services becomes available.
