W3C's mobile push

The World Wide Web Consortium or W3C, on Wednesday announced its Mobile Web Initiative or MWI, during the WWW2005 Conference. W3C's Mobile Web Initiative is designed to improve the quality of the web experience for mobile devices.

"Web access today is so fundamental, that it shouldn't be hampered by wires," said Philipp Hoschka, W3C's deputy director for Europe. "Through this initiative, we're committed to improving the state of the art in mobile Web content production and mobile access."

"Mobile access to the Web has been a second-class experience for far too long," Web founding father and W3C director Tim Berners-Lee said in a statement. "MWI recognizes the mobile device as a first-class participant, and will produce materials to help developers make the mobile Web experience worthwhile."

Although many of today's mobile devices already feature Web browsers and the demand for mobile devices continues to grow, browsing the Web from a mobile device is still not streamlined. The Best Practices Working Group( publishes guidelines and best practices for Web content authors) and The Device Description Working Group (publisesh a database with descriptions that content authors can use for tailoring their pages to various devices) make up The MWI .

Founding sponsors of the MWI include France Telecom, Hewlett-Packard, MobileAware, Segala M Test, Vodafone and Volantis reports Zdnet.
