Sober.P Widespread

News Room

Experts at London's Sophos computer security firm are urging Windows users to update their Anti-virus software, and not to open unexpected e-mails with attachments as a new variant of the Sober worm, called Sober.p aka Sober.n aka Sober.o spreads like wild fire. Sober.P affects computers running Windows 2000, 95, 98, Me, NT, Server 2003 and XP.

Sober.p uses both English and German headings and text -- and spreads by mass mailing copies to addresses it steals.

The German versions, have headings such as "Glueckwunsch: Ihr WM Ticket" and "WM-Ticket-Auslosung," playing off European fever for soccer by promising free tickets to next year's FIFA World Cup. This variant seems to have caught a lot of people off guard because its release coincided with a mail out by Fifa telling fans about tickets.

The English editions feature subject headings such as "Re: Your email was blocked" and "Re:mailing error."

Anyone opening these attachments will have their computer infected, their address book seized and a back door into their machine opened for others to use.

Sophos claims the Sober worm now accounts for one in every 22 emails. Sophos claimed that the mass-mailing worm, which has been reported in 40 countries after first appearing on Monday, now accounts for 79 percent of all viruses the company is seeing.
