CellPhones

Vodafone, Sharp and NHK, Japan have announced a trial model cellular phone that receives digital TV broadcasts.

The phone will also support data transmission and H.264/AVC movies, as well as a multi-sectioned screen, allowing the user to watch TV as they write e-mail or use the web. It will operate for approximately 2 hours. It measures 50 x 101.5 x 28.8 mm and weighs 133 g.

Utilizing digital broadcasts, users will be able to receive extra information about the programs being viewed and take part in quizzes and surveys. The device will appear at NHK's technology development booth at "Technology Development Expo 2005" from May 26th - 29th. It will also make an appearance in the Global House at the Aichi World Expo from June 1st.

Vodafone has displayed concept models in the past, but this is the first time for it to unveil a mobile phone that can receive digital broadcasts. The number of devices that can receive the signal will surely increase with the development of digital broadcasting. Via Tech Japan
