Cisco "ASA 5500" products

Business

Cisco Systems Inc., the largest maker of routers and other communications gear for directing Internet traffic, is preparing to unveil on Tuesday its latest network security products, a suite of devices that unify multiple security functions onto a single platform to help companies simplify network management and trim costs. Cisco is looking to gain ground in the network security products market.

On Tuesday, Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers will announce details of the company's new "ASA 5500" or "Adaptive Security Appliance 5500" series of products at a trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The products build on the "self-defending" offerings San Jose, California-based Cisco unveiled in mid-February to identify and stop network attacks before they spread.

The Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance 5500 series, lists for about $3,000 to $17,000 a box depending on the speed of data packets it is managing. Cisco expects customers to start with a few security applications to begin with, but they can add applications and future functions to the device for additional cost.

"Now with one single platform you can manage and concurrently control all of these security functions in one place," Jayshree Ullal, senior vice president of Cisco's security technology group, told Reuters.
