Tiger Spotlight

Apple

In a chat with Business Week Apple CEO Steve Jobs described Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger as "our biggest leap forward since the original Macintosh in 1984." The new upgrade hailed by Jobs as one more reason to buy a Mac, because it's so far ahead of Windows will sell for about $129, release date Friday, April 29, at 6pm. Jobs joked: "This is one of those rare occasions when a major software release is actually early."

The new update includes new features such as Spotlight, Apple's advanced desktop search function that searches the computer's hard disk drive to find documents, e-mail, pictures and music, similar to the way Google searches the Internet.

Tiger also features Dashboard, which Apple says will provide instant access to weather reports and stock quotes. Tiger also supports the next-generation video-compression standard H.264 and allows multiple users on the video conferencing program iChat.

The server version of Tiger will also be released at the same time, Apple said. Wall Street analysts expect Tiger to be a big hit for Apple.
