Sony PSP push .5 million in 2 days

Gaming

Sales for the Sony PSP were more than $150 million in the first week in North America, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. said in a statement released yesterday. Sony Corp. sold 500,000 units of its PlayStation Portable handheld video game device in the first two days after its North American release. The news comes after a recent survey by American Technology Research which showed only 50 of 150 retailers reporting sell outs of the PSP in the week following its March 24 release. Some analysts had predicted the company would sell 4.5 million to 5.5 million PSPs in North America this calendar year.

The device, which lets users play games as well as listen to music and watch movies, retails for $249. The PlayStation Portable is the first device from Sony to challenge Nintendo Co., the world's biggest maker of hand-held game players, in the $4.5 billion portable games market.

Sony's share price climbed in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
