Apple Computer is backing Sony Corporation's Blu-ray format for the next generation of digital video discs, bolstering Sony's effort to dominate the market for DVD's and players. Sony is fighting to win support for its standard over the HD-DVD format that is backed by Toshiba and NEC reports Bloomerg.com
Apple joined the Blu-ray Disc Association's board, a statement by Blu-ray said yesterday. Blu-ray said Apple would support the new high-definition DVD format in its iMovie and Final Cut video-editing software programs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc will hold up to 25 gigabytes of data and a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc will hold up to 50 gigabytes of data. Current DVDs hold 4.7 gigabytes on single-layer discs and 8.5 gigabytes on dual-layer discs.
Other top technology companies backing Blu-ray include Dell, Hewlett Packard, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sharp, TDK Corporation, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney Pictures and Television.
"Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD," Steven P. Jobs, Apple's chief executive, said in a statement on the Blu-ray Web site.
