HVD Alliance

News Room

CMC Magnetics, FUJI PHOTO FILM, Nippon Paint, Optware, Pulstec Industrial and TOAGOSEI, has announced the formation of the "HVD Alliance" to accelerate the development and promotion of HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc). D-Silence reports Holographic recording technology records data on discs in the form of laser interference fringes, enabling existing discs the same size as today's DVDs to store more than 1TB of data (200 times the capacity of a single layer DVD), with a transfer rate of over 1Gb per second (40 times the speed of DVD). HVD is a possible successor to technologies such as Blu-ray and HD DVD. Single layer Blu-ray discs hold about 25GB of data while dual layer discs hold 50GB. Ordinary DVD discs hold about 4.7GB. The technology behind HVD is based on holography technology from Japan's Optware, one of the six founders of the consortium.
