Reuters is reporting that mobile phone virus Cabir has been detected in the US. Cabir, was found in a technology gadgets store in Santa Monica, California on Monday, when a passing techie spotted a telltale sign on the screen of a phone in the store. There were two infected cellphones in the store, both Nokia. The Cabir virus targets smart phones, a combination of handheld computers and cell phones .

The biggest impact of the relatively innocuous virus, found in about 15 variations so far, is draining mobile phone batteries, said Mikko Hypponen, director of Finnish anti-virus research company F-Secure.

For Cabir to spread around from one device to another, both devices (the infected and the vulnerable unit) must have a Bluetooth wireless data transfer facility. The worm spreads through its nearby phones by wireless contact in a definite range. So far it drains mobile phones batteries, said Mikko Hypponen, director of Finnish anti-virus research company F-Secure. "It's not the end of the world," that it was found in the US, he added.

The responsibility for the virus was claimed by hacker Vallez at a group called 29A Labs. The group said it is aimed at creating "new, unique, interesting viruses."
