Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager for incident response at security technology maker Symantec said the worm (bot software) exploiting weak MySQL database passwords on Windows computers had essentially stopped spreading after the systems infected with the program were cut off from the control of several central computers. An estimated 8,000 Windows computers running the MySQL database were probably infected with the worm program, referred to as the MySQL bot worm or SpoolCLL, that the worm installs on vulnerable machines. "We are just seeing residual infections," Friedrichs said. "The worm (Spybot.ivq) cannot connect to those servers, so it has lost its control channel. Without those commands, the worm is not going to be able to spread." Zdnet reports that yesterday, the company that develops the MySQL database software, MySQL AB, emphasized that the bot software spread by exploiting weak passwords and that MySQL runs with elevated privileges under Windows. The company's security team released an advisory outlining steps that MySQL administrators could use to identify infections and safeguard their systems. Microsoft was not immediately available for comment on whether the installation of code by exploiting MySQL's user-defined functions could be blocked on Windows.

A federal judge sentenced 19-year-old Jeffrey Lee Parson to 18 months in prison for releasing a variant of the Blaster worm that was used to attack more than 48,000 computers resulting in an estimated $1.2 million in damage when it spread in August 2003. FBI agents arrested Parson at his home in Hopkins, Minnesota, in August 2003, just two weeks after his "MSBlast.B" variant began to tunnel into Microsoft Windows-based computers. Parson pleaded guilty to attempting to cause damage to a protected computer and to, "modifying the Blaster Internet worm and using it to launch a distributed denial-of-service attack against a Microsoft Windows update Web site as well as personal computers". Now 19, appeared in US District Court in Seattle, where he was also ordered to perform community service, pay restitution and be placed under supervision for three years following the sentence. Parson said he created his "B" or "teekids" variant of the Blaster worm and used it to access fifty computers which he then used to launch a broader attack on more than 48,000 computers. CNN reports Parson's lawyers said he has made great strides since his arrest. They also credited him with making a Seattle School District video warning teens of the dangers of Internet vandalism.

The popular open-source database MySQL that caters to Web-based applications. Unix and Linux systems is under attack by the MySpooler worm which targets weak password controlled systems and then uses a known exploit to gain entry to install a backdoor program called a "Wootbot." Infected systems connect to an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server, which instructs them to scan various networks for other vulnerable mysql servers. The new malware worm started to spread across the net yesterday and has so far infected several thousand MySQL installations, spreading at the rate of 100 per minute. The MySQL AB Web site claims more than 5 million MySQL installations worldwide.
MySQL users are advised to select a strong password for the "root" account on Windows installations. Administrators should also set up restricted access to root accounts and apply firewall rules to make sure MySQL servers are not exposed to attackers. -
update 7:06 pm - Symantec reports the nasty mySQL worm that spread to over 8,000 Windows machines has been stopped in it's tracks. The Internet Relay Chat (IRC) servers that caused the worm to spread are now closed. However, many systems still have to be checked to ensure they have not been compromised.
